Girls U15 Cricket Team play in their debut Indoor Cricket Competition

One of the new sports we are encouraging girls at Giles Academy to participate in is cricket. Through our links with the ECB (England & Wales Cricket Board) we are working together to make cricket a truly gender-balanced sport as it is a fun inclusive game that everyone can enjoy.

A team of Year 9 students represented Giles Academy in our first ECB U15 Indoor Cricket Competition when we hosted the first tournament as we competed against University Academy Holbeach (UAH).

Both schools were new to this fast-paced sport, so the first match was a training/coaching match to support both teams into the tournament. It was evenly matched with UAH winning the practice match by five runs and it gave everyone the opportunity to develop their skills, understanding, teamwork and tactics.

The format of the tournament was to play three matches, which saw both teams capitalise on spells of good batting and fielding errors. UAH won two games 79-61 and 100-58 and Giles won one game 83-55. As UAH won the most games, they will be progressing to the next round of the competition.

During the tournament, students from both schools made great progress in their ability and it was fantastic to see such a great development in skill and technique through coaching and playing. Positive links between the schools have been made and we have agreed to play future friendly matches to continue the outstanding development.

If students are interested in playing cricket, in Terms 5 and 6 there is a new Boys Cricket Club after school on Tuesdays and Girls Cricket Club after school on Wednesdays. The clubs are open for all years to participate in with the opportunity for students to compete in future competitions.

Mrs Cooper and Mr Dodd, who have been coaching the team and run the new cricket clubs said “Congratulations to Luciella, Bea, Kamile, Amelia, Connie, Katelyn, Millie and Millie for being brave to try something so new and for representing Giles Academy to such a high standard. We are very proud of you.”
