Above is a video with further information about the subject

This is an optional subject which all students will study for 3 hours per week.

The BTEC Tech Award in Art & Design: Photography and Graphics is a vocational qualification closely linked to the demands of the industry. Students will work on set assignments and produce work that meets a brief, just as a real artist or designer would.

The course is designed to prepare and provide students with a choice of routes into further education or employment. It is equivalent to 1 GCSE with a Distinction*, Distinction, Merit or Pass grade. Each assignment will have every task written in detail and it will be very clear to students what they must hand in to achieve a Pass, Merit, or Distinction.

This course is ideal for students who have a strong interest in Art & Design in particular Graphics and Photography and may wish to move towards a career in some aspect of the industry. Examples of this may be Graphic Designer, Illustrator, Animator, Website Designer, Game Designer, Photo Editor, Photographer or Photojournalist.

Students will be required to explore a diverse range of graphic and photographic techniques and processes, ensuring the use of drawing is used to develop and support their ideas.

The Photography and Graphics course is an exciting and diverse programme. Students will have access to DSLR cameras, a photography studio and explore the processes of creating outcomes digitally and by hand. Areas of study could include: Advertising, Communication Graphics, Design for Print, Illustration, Package Design, Typography, Documentary Photography, Studio Photography, Location Photography, Experimental Imagery. Students will use the visual language of the subject sensitively and thoughtfully to support their intentions.

Students will cover the following units in their design briefs during Year 10 and the first half of Year 11:

  • Generating Ideas in Art & Design: Graphics and Photography
  • Developing Practical Skills in Art & Design: Graphics and Photography

The Art & Design department organise a trip to support learning in Year 10. The cost will be approximately £30.

In the second half of Year 11, students will complete an externally set assignment. This will take place over a period of 10 weeks of lesson time, allowing students to prepare a practical project with their teacher support. Students will then have 10 hours to produce a final outcome in controlled conditions.

There are various Sixth Forms and Colleges around the local area where you can study A-level and BTEC qualifications. To give you an indication of the grades you may require, if you achieve a level 2 pass in BTEC Level 2 Art & Design you could study BTEC Level 3 Art & Design at Bourne Academy Sixth Form, or other Level 3 Art & Design, Graphic Design and Photography qualifications at College.
