Artificial Intelligence Roadshow inspires careers in engineering

One of the fastest growing technologies we are living with now is Artificial Intelligence as it can be found in homes, businesses and even in our hands. Many of us are probably used to having a conversation with Siri or Alexa and have chatted to virtual assistants online, but the future possibilities of AI are incredibly exciting.

The whole of Year 7 and 8 were treated to an educational and entertaining ‘Artificial Intelligence Roadshow’ to highlight the powers of AI and how this amazing technology will still rely on humans’ skills to innovate, operate and program.

This interactive roadshow was delivered by the Education Programme at BAE Systems, Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force to inspire our students to explore the careers available to them in engineering as this ground-breaking technology needs the next generation of engineers.

‘Lexi the Cobot’ certainly stole the show as it demonstrated how a ‘collaborative robot’ can perform tricks, understand voice and hand commands plus navigate mazes using artificial intelligence as it learns to think for itself.

To demonstrate the powers of AI, there was a live demonstration to write a brand-new pop song with suggestions from students about the theme and the musical instruments to be used. No pop song would be complete without a video and this was also created using the AI technology.

Whilst there are many ways that AI can be used for improving our lives, there are also concerns with how it can be used for plagiarism of homework or creating deep fakes and this was addressed in the roadshow.

Thank you to the amazing STEM ambassadors from BAE Systems Education Programme (and Lexi the Cobot) for visiting our school and giving our students an insight into how AI is used and how engineers will play a vital role in its development and implementation.
