Bedrock Masterclasses increase literacy and vocabulary skills and knowledge

One of the learning platforms Giles Academy utilises to improve the literacy and vocabulary of our students is Bedrock Learning. We are one of 900 schools in the UK that Bedrock works with and are proud to have some of the highest engagement and completion levels amongst all schools.

Recently, we introduced the ‘Bedrock Mapper’ feature to our Years 10 and 11 students, which is already helping them excel in the classroom. We encourage use of this online tool as it really helps with student attainment at the end of Key Stage 4 across all subjects.

We were therefore delighted to welcome Mr Andy Sammons to Giles Academy as he is the Director of Teaching & Learning at Bedrock Learning. He spoke to students and staff about the platform’s use both in the classroom and at home.

During his visit, 90 of our Year 11 students benefited from a two-hour English Masterclass designed to enhance their skills and knowledge for the English Language and English Literature GCSE papers. The session was extremely well-received, with students engaging positively and gaining a lot from the experience.

Andy also conducted a workshop with our Year 7 and 8 students and led a training session for our staff. His focus was on reviewing our Bedrock provision, implementing Bedrock Mapper, and exploring further uses of this excellent learning tool. It was great for our students to have the opportunity to discuss their Bedrock experiences with Andy and provided valuable feedback, which will help shape future developments. As a reward for their hard work, Bedrock gifted the students a brand-new book of their choice.

Mrs Bland, Trust Executive Education Director and Lead of the Trust Communications Agenda, said, “We were extremely fortunate to welcome Andy to Giles Academy. His session was inspirational for both staff and students, and we gained a lot of value from the day. Our Year 11 students embraced the masterclass opportunity positively, with many commenting on the fresh perspective it provided. As always, our students were excellent ambassadors, and Andy was very impressed with their contributions.”
