PSHE lessons focus on staying safe around water in the summer

With the recent heatwaves and the summer holidays coming soon, we know that everyone likes to stay cool and due to this there is the temptation for some to risk swimming in open water areas, such as rivers, canals, lakes, quarries and reservoirs.

During PSHE lessons this week, we have focussing on water safety to highlight the dangers, risks and how to stay safe – especially around open water.

The harsh reality is that every year, over 300 people drown in the UK because they get into difficulty in water, which can be due to underestimating the water currents, cold water temperatures (even in summer), not knowing what is underneath the water surface or even contamination in the water.

It doesn’t matter how confident a swimmer you are, anyone can put themselves or even others in danger.

The following video from Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS) was shown to students and used for discussion points. We recommend families watch this together so they can also discuss, as it could save a life.

As well as highlighting the dangers and risks, we provided students with useful information on how to stay safe if they or others encountered difficulties.

If you do want to swim this summer – follow the RLSS Water Safety Code and only go to designated areas such as pools, lidos or the seaside that have qualified lifeguards.
