Footballers discover pathways at Boston United Post-16 Careers Day
With the amazing success of the Lionesses having won the UEFA Women’s Championship in 2022 & 2025 plus runners-up in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, and Arsenal winning the UEFA Women’s Champions League in 2025, interest in women’s football is greater than ever.
On a club level, the WSL is generating record attendances, there are high-profile sponsorships and matches are regularly screened on TV, so there is rising commercial revenue. Due to this growth, there will be more opportunities than ever for a career in the game that is also seeing grassroots participation grow year-on-year.
It is therefore encouraging to see Boston United FC taking the initiative to grow the women’s game as we recently took 11 students to the first Boston United Post-16 Careers Day that was purely focused on girls.
The event commenced with a presentation from the Head of Education at Boston United FC covering the various pathways for players and the potential post-16 career opportunities.
A range of courses were explained such as NCFE Level 2 Diploma in Sport, Level 3 Diploma in Sport & Physical Activity, BTEC Level 3 in Business, and NCF Level 3 Diploma in Gym Instructing & Personal Training. There are also Higher Education pathways up to Level 5 in Sport & Exercise Science, Coaching Science and Business.
Students were treated to a tour of the stadium with behind-the-scenes access to a corporate box, security match day control room, the director’s seats, the tunnel and dug out, changing rooms, restaurant and club shop. It was fascinating to get an insight into all of the various areas of the club that you never normally get to see.
The day then culminated with a five-a-side football tournament on the 3G training pitch with football skill training stations focusing on passing, control, shooting, dribbling and finding space. The tournament included teams from Giles Academy, Haven High Academy and Havelock Academy from Grimsby where all teams playing each other and Giles Academy come out as the tournament winners!
Thank you for Boston United FC for organising the Careers Day and inspiring our students to explore the amazing new opportunities available to them.
